I live for jewelry that you can wear in more than one way. It’s a challenge to design and craft. Van Cleef & Arpels makes it look easy with their Barquerolles Choker, AKA “The Granny Necklace”. It received the nickname because Richard Burton purchased it for Elizabeth Taylor in 1971 when she learned that she would become a grandmother.
The The Barquerolles necklace is constructed in 18k gold with diamonds and emeralds. It features a lion head with a detachable double diamond hoop in its mouth. The lion can be worn with the necklace or alone as a clip/brooch. The double diamond hoop is also a pendant. The choker’s two wide bands can be clipped together as a necklace or worn separately as two bracelets. It is an amazing design and a stunning piece. Take a look at the gorgeous photos of the it on Margo Raffaelli’s site.
The piece was so important to Van Cleef & Arpels that they reportedly paid $902,500 for it at The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor: The Legendary Jewels auction. It now travels around the world as part of their permanent collection.
